In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to find, understand and use the features of different map layers in OS Maps to make the most of your time outdoors

Map Layers:

1. When you login to OS Maps for the first time, you’ll start on our default standard map view, our free street-level mapping and a great way to familiarise yourself with mapping and to start planning your outdoor activities.

2. Depending on what activity you’re planning, or the level of detail you need when browsing our maps, there’s multiple options to choose from. You can access the different map types by selecting the 'Map Types' icon (stacked squares symbol) in the bottom right corner of the screen. Here you will be able to see all the available map types, and overlays.

3. Click or tap on the preferred map type and/or overlay to see a preview on screen, when you've found the right map, click 'X' to return to the main map screen with your chosen map type.

Some map types & overlays including Topographic are only available to premium users.

Free, simple street-view mapping. Ideal for finding locations, and getting used to maps

OS’ highly detailed mapping, perfect for planning any outdoor activity. Only available to premium subscribers

Aerial Map

High resolution aerial imagery, allowing you to see locations & terrain in greater detail

Exploring Locations & Places of Interest:

1. If you want to explore locations via the map screen, you can do so by panning across the map and zooming in/out.

2. Simply click and drag the mouse to pan across the map and use the mouse scroll wheel to zoom in/out. You'll also find the zoom bar on the right hand side of the screen.

3. You can also zoom in/out using the zoom slider on the right hand side of the screen.

4. Tap or click the 'find my location' button (the crosshair symbol found in the bottom right corner of the main map screen) to show your current location, you can also click this button again to stop the map centring on your location.

5. You can use the 'Places' tool on OS Maps web to highlight specific features on the map. These include things like car parks, bus stops, pubs, trigpoints and other points of interest. Select the 'Places' icon on the right hand side of the main map screen and select the ‘places’ you want to see as symbols on the map.
